Chapter18|Jermaine

Sunday morning. Brenda convinced me to go to church with her. Since I hadn’t planned on staying last night, I jetted by Wal-Mart an hour after rising this morning. I picked up a few items including a toothbrush, a fresh pair of underclothes, and a bottle of peroxide to nurse my knuckles. I was able to find a pair of black slacks, a white collared shirt, and a cheapened version of my normal pair of dress shoes to wear to church. I approached the checkout line with a confidence I hadn’t owned in a while.

As we walked into the sanctuary all of those old emotions resurfaced. Those emotions reminding me of when we used to spend quality time together. The times when I cared less about what was going on in the world and more about my heart and our relationship.

Brenda was my first. When I say first, I mean that she was the first woman I ever fell in love with. Before her, I never thought about being serious with a female on any level. I never took the time of day to see where things could go or gave enough effort to even care. High school was the introduction of things to come. When I met up with her for the second time in college, I caught a case of the Jones—the Love Jones.

I adjusted my collar and followed Brenda’s lead up the aisle. I straightened my back as she showed me to a row near the front of the church. I consciously ignored the curious eyes on my back and slowly sat down. I hiked up my slacks for a more comfortable feel and peeled off my coat. I draped my arm over the back of the seat, wondering what really made Brenda change. I stared at her, speculating on the part of her past that didn’t include me.

“How long does service usually last?” I whispered in Brenda’s ear.

She casually leaned over and smiled. “About four hours.”

I almost believed Brenda until she cracked a smile. I discreetly pinched her thigh and she scooted a couple inches away from me. We stood a few moments later as the Church Covenant was read aloud. I secretly examined her every move. Silk stockings hugged her strong, toned legs, a daring skirt suit challenged my imagination, and teardrop earrings all reminded me of what I had been missing over the past couple of years. I can honestly say she’s still the same woman, only better. More sophisticated. More beautiful. More intelligent. More open. All of the qualities I needed in a best friend and then some.

As she recited the Church Covenant, I stared at her lips and hung off every word she spoke. I hope she seriously don’t that I’m aiming to make her that rebound romance she joked about last night. A time later we took our respective seats. I watched closely as she crossed her legs. I cleared my throat and shook myself from the gaze.

“Did you want a piece of gum?” Brenda reached into her purse.
